A Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by excess current, typically resulting from an overload or short circuit.
1P (Single Pole) switches and protects a single phase line. 2P (Double Pole) switches and protects both phase and neutral lines in single-phase systems. 4P (Four Pole) switches and protects three phase lines plus the neutral line in three-phase electrical systems.
1P MCBs are primarily used in standard single-phase residential circuits, such as lighting systems, small home appliances, and low-power commercial branch circuits.
A 4P MCB is recommended when total isolation of the neutral wire is required for system safety, such as in dual-power switching systems, TT earthing systems, or sensitive industrial installations with non-linear loads.
MCBs use a bimetallic strip for overload protection (thermal operation), which bends and trips the circuit under sustained high temperature, and an electromagnetic coil for short-circuit protection (magnetic operation), which instantly trips under sudden current surges.
